THE ART OF DANCING IN ROBERT DE VISEE One of the most notable progresses in the research in the interpretation
of 17th and 18th century music has been the rediscovery of the Baroque
dance and its practice. In France we owe this to the happy conjunction
of the work of Antoine Geoffroy-Dechaume in the music, and of Francine
Lancelot in the choreography. Michelle Castellengo < |

This recording of Robert de Visée might come as a surprise to
certain uninformed listeners. In fact, the manner of playing the guitar
at the end of the 1 7th century presents the peculiarity of remaining
closely linked to that of the instrument with five courses of strings.
By virtue of the "batteries", rapid ascending or descending
strumming movements with the right hand, described by Mersenne in 1636,
this guitar was able to provide simple but effective harmonic and rhythmic
accompaniments, due to the rather harsh sonorities of the strings struck
in this way.

Guitar International 12/86 It is, ironically, easier to translate renaissance-lute music to the classic guitar sans betise than to do the same for baroque-guitar music. The combination of (variable) octave-tuned lower strings, and re-entrant tuning make it impossible to reproduce the sonorities, or often even the note-content, of the original, and the subtle ambiguities are lost. Though some acceptable arrangements that preserve the spirit and lightness of the music are on the market, so too are plenty which debilitate, bowdlerise and even misrepresent it. We have, I hope, passed the 'dark ages' in which someone might complain (as someone did to the late Peter Sensier) that anyone should 'have the temerity to raise the instrument (the baroque guitar) knee-high'; if we do not choose to tangle with the instrument itself we should still pay attention to the way in which we should play the music we borrow from it, De Visée is at once one of the most frequent sources of our loans and the most often to be presented in nonsensical editions; the present recording leaves no excuse for continuing to treat his music with the ignorance that still prevails in some quarters.
Andia's recording follows the natural order of the pieces, presenting first the Baroque music is rarely to be played as it looks on the page, a point (or points) well made by Andia's stylish performances, John Duarte |

Dabei lernt man beim. |
